Radiologic Technology Admission Requirements

Thank you for your interest in Minnesota State Community and Technical College’s Radiologic Technology program. This program is designed to prepare qualified students for entry-level positions as certified radiologic technologists.
Acceptance into the Radiologic Technology program is competitive. Admission is based on the selection criteria listed below. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Students who do not meet the criteria will not be considered for the program. Please review this information carefully.
- Complete an application and be admitted to M State.
- Complete an online application to the Radiologic Technology program.
- Complete the Accuplacer assessment and be eligible to enroll in COMM 1140 (Interpersonal Communication) and MATH 1114 (College Algebra). If the Accuplacer assessment indicates that developmental courses are required, the coursework must be completed before you begin your required general education courses.
- The following biology courses have a five-year recency requirement, meaning they must have been taken within five years of the programs start date. For Fall 2025 admission, courses will need to be taken Fall 2020 or later to be valid.

Apply to M State
To be considered for the Radiologic Technology program, you must apply to and be accepted to M State. The application for the Radiologic Technology program is separate. You must be accepted to M State to access the Radiologic Technology program application.

Returning to M State - Submit an online application for admission at Admissions. If you have attended another college since you last attended M State, you will also need to request that your official transcript be sent to the M State Processing Center.

Students should allow up to six weeks for transfer work to be received, evaluated and entered into their Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) audit. Transfer courses will not count toward admission to the program until they have been evaluated by the M State transfer specialist and successfully transferred.
Current M State student - If you are currently attending M State, you will not need to update your application to the college.
You must submit the Radiologic Technology program application to be considered for the program. Please read and understand the eligibility criteria before applying. You must be accepted to M State to access the program application.
If you have earned college credits for any of the required Radiologic Technology general education courses, you must have an average GPA of at least 2.5 in each of the courses to be considered for acceptance into the program.
- Math Requirement: Math scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into MATH 1114 College Algebra or higher. Students testing into developmental math must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.
- English Requirement: Reading scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into ENGL 1101 College Writing. Students testing into developmental English must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.
- Placement Testing: Students who have not completed COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication and Math 1114 College Algebra and who do not have recent Accuplacer, ACT scores or high school GPA waivers are required to complete placement testing. Students who need to complete placement testing should visit Placement Testing for testing dates and locations.
An applicant's grades in prerequisite general education courses are used to calculate GPA for program acceptance. Applicants with the highest GPA will be accepted into the program. The following courses are used to determine prerequisite GPA:
- BIOL 2260 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- MATH 1114 College Algebra
- PHYS 1105 Fundamental Concepts of Physics
- RADT 1102 Fundamental Concepts of Radiologic Technology
- BIOL 2262 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication or Goal area 1 completed
Any four of the prerequisite courses must be completed before application review.
BIOL 2260 and BIOL 2262 must have been completed within five years prior to the program start date. For the Fall 2025 start, the course must have been taken Fall 2020 or later.
Students will be accepted into the program based on the completion of Radiologic Technology program prerequisite general education courses. A successfully completed course is one that is completed before the application deadline and has a grade of C or better.
A student’s grades in prerequisite general education courses are used to calculate GPA for program acceptance. A GPA of 2.5 or better in completed prerequisite courses is required to be accepted into the program.
Any four of the following courses can be used to determine prerequisite GPA. If more than four courses are completed at the time of application, all courses will be used to calculate prerequisite GPA.
- BIOL2260 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- BIOL2262 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- MATH1114 College Algebra
- PHYS1105 Fundamental Concepts of Physics
- RADT1102 Fundamental Concepts of Radiologic Technology
- COMM1140 Interpersonal Communication or Goal area 1 completed
The sixteen applicants with the highest prerequisite GPA will be accepted into the program. Additionally, five alternates will be chosen and offered a seat in the program should an opening occur.
In case of a tie, the tiebreaker is cumulative college GPA.

Each student who has submitted a complete admissions file by the posted deadline will receive an email from the college indicating whether they are accepted into the program, placed on the program waiting list or currently ineligible for the program. Please be sure to provide your current email address on your program application.
Applicants will be notified on or before Feb. 15.

Additional program requirements for accepted students
Correspondence from the college will provide more information related to the following. However, Radiologic Technology program applicants are encouraged to consider these requirements ahead of time.
Students are required to have a laptop computer for Radiologic Technology coursework. The cost for a laptop computer will be in addition to the cost of tuition, fees and books. The required computer specifications can be found at Computer Requirements.
The clinical facilities used by the Radiologic Technology program require students to have a current American Heart Association/Health Care Providers CPR certificate. Proof of CPR certificate must be presented prior to the start of the Radiologic Technology clinical courses.
A background check is a mandatory review of an individual’s criminal history as recorded by the state of Minnesota and/or the federal government. Students in M State's healthcare programs must pass background check(s) before being assigned to clinical sites where they will have contact with patients.
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists also requires an ethics review and background check before an individual can take the ARRT registry exam to be certified as a radiologic technologist. To ensure students meet these requirements, a background check must be performed prior to starting M State’s Radiologic Technology core classes.
M State advisors are available to assist in finding alternative education options for students who do not pass the required Radiologic Technology background checks and cannot provide direct patient care.
Instructions for completing background checks will be provided via official M State email from Joel Hoffman, nursing lab assistant.
Accepted students are required to complete a health form before they are eligible to start core Radiologic Technology courses.
The Radiologic Technology Program Handbook provides students with information regarding program policies and standards. Accepted students are required to review the handbook and agree to abide by the policies and standards.
Clinical rotations are generally scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students will be required to complete occasional evening and weekend assignments throughout the program.
